1. Customizing Index

Windows Vista has good feature to search files. Windows Vista will make index from all files in hard disk. By this index, the searching is faster than without index in Windows XP. But, how many times users search a file? If you rarely do it, the making of index by Windows Vista is useless. It is better to use the computer resource to other applications, such as game.

There is a way to make the computer performance is good but the searching is fast. You just make an index for special folder or file types. Open the Control Panel, enter to Indexing options. Click [Modify] button then choose the folder you want to make an index. Click [OK] then click [Advanced]. Open tab “File Types” to choose file type.

2. Turn Off Effects

The appearance of windows Vista is going better because of Windows Aero. Unfortunately, the function of Windows Aero is just it and the feature needs lot of resources. If you want a faster performance of computer,  turn off the feature is no problem.

The steps to turn off Aero: right click the space in desktop, then click [personalize] and then click [Theme]. Choose [Classic Look of Windows] and Aero is turning off now.

If you want the appearance is still use Windows Vista but without Aero, click [Windows Color and Appearance]. Unmark the [Enable Transparency]. Then click [Effects] and unmark all options.

3. Optimize SATA Hard Disk’s Performance

We must adjust Device Manager to get the fastest hard disk performance. SATA connection has 300MB per second speed theoretically, but the hard disk just 120MB per second. Open the Device Manager by open Start menu, fill “devmgmt.msc” then press Enter. In the hard ware list, double click [Disk drives] to see the menu below. Then double click your hard drive. Click [Policies] tab and mark [Enable Advanced performance].  But, there is a risk you will lose your data when electric power  supply suddenly off.

4. Speed Up the Start Up

Many programs run when Windows begin operate. Those programs are in start up list. A web site tells that this start up is a double effect thing. In one side, the programs which listed in start up can make the other programs opened faster. But in other side windows need more time to start up. It is also decrease the memory that can be used by other programs.

We can turn off the programs that we want to or unneeded programs in start up list. Click Windows logo to access Start menu, find Startup sub menu, then right click on program shortcut and click [Delete].

Not all programs run in start up listed in Start menu. Some programs hide in registry. Open Registry Editor, enter to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun. Look at the program list in right side. Delete the program you want to or unneeded. But there are programs you should not to delete, such as Anti virus. You can also enter to HKEY_LOKAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun and check out if there are programs you want to delete.

5. Using ReadyBoost

The most effective way to improve Windows performance is by added memory. But memory is expensive. Add memory by USB flash disk is the cheaper way. You can use other USB media storage too. By this way, the improvement of performance is not as fast as by add real memory.

There is Windows Vista feature to do that, ReadyBoost. Plug in the USB media storage; choose [Speed up my computer] option in auto play window. If the auto play is inactive, you can turn on ReadyBoost by right click on USB flas disk drive then click [Properties]. Click [readyBoost] tab and make sure that you chosen [Use this device] option. Then, adjust the capacity to use by ReadyBoost  by scrolling.

6. Stop Checking the Hard Disk’s Free Space

The information balloons which rise on bottom right of limit free space is uncomforting for some users. You can stop it. Run the Registry Editor, enter to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer. Then click [Edit] >New>[DWORD(32-bit) value]. Name “NoLowDiskSpaceCheck”. Double click the DWORD value then fill the value with”1”.

Then enter to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced. Find DWORD value named “EnableBalloonTips’, “FolderContentInfoTip”, and “StartButtonBalloonTip”. If those DWORD value is not exist, make it. Just like make No Low Disk Space Check. Then fillthe value with ‘0’.

7. Hard Disk Maintenance

Hard disk maintenance is not only in physically. It is also by delete unwanted files or programs. Hard disk will not optimal when full with files and programs. Below are steps to clean the hard disk from internet cache files, deleted programs, and unwanted programs. Open start menu then enter to [All programs]>[Accessories]>[System Tools]>[Disk Cleanup] or by open Start menu then type “Disk Cleanup’ in search box then enter.

You choose the drive you want to clean, then click[OK]. You can choose [more option] and click two buttons to delete soft ware and System Restore File that is unneeded.  You can also defrag the hard disk. Click [Start] menu then enter to [All programs]>[Accessories]>[System Tools]>[Defragment].

8. Adjust the “Page File”

Windows Vista has a good “page file” system. Page file in Windows Vista is made in small size to eliminate the using of storage. If you have 2 hard disks, find the faster hard disk. Adjust the page file to be saved in the faster hard disk. If you have 2 hard disks with same speed or only have 1 hard disk, place the page file in different partition with Windows partition.

First, right click [Computer], then click [properties], click [Advanced System Settings] in the left side. Click [Advanced] tab then click the first of three options. Enter to [Advanced] tab, click [Change] button and unmark [Automatically manage paging file size for all drives]. Click [Set]. Then choose drive C and click [No paging file].
